Television: American Idol Update
Sunday, 2005 April 3 - 5:30 pm
Sorry, I just have to talk about The Show again.

So it's down to nine on American Idol.

I can't understand how Scott Savol is still on the show. He's SCARY. Was anyone surprised by the story that he was once arrested for domestic violence? From the AP news story:

Ohio police documents posted on The Smoking Gun Web site said Savol, now 28, had a confrontation with Michele Martin, the mother of his son, in February 2001. According to a Shaker Heights Police Department report, the couple had decided to separate, but when Savol arrived at Martin's mother's home to collect his belongings, he called Martin "several vulgar names,""pulled an engagement ring off her finger" and "stated he was also going to take their son."

When Martin threatened to call police, Savol shoved her, pulled the phone from her hand and then threw it at her, striking her in the chest and causing the phone to break, the police report said.

Savol pleaded to a reduced misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge, was fined $500, ordered to complete an anger management or domestic violence program, placed on a year's probation and sentenced to a suspended 20-day jail term, according to the Web site.

Sheesh.

I've been giving scores to each performance for the last six weeks, and here's my current scorecard:

1. Carrie Underwood, 50 points. She's the clear favorite right now. She's cute, she seems comfortable on stage, and she has a great voice. I don't know if her country-girl style is going to wear thin after a while, though.

2. Vonzell Solomon, 49 points. She looks better and better each week. It's really helped that she's softened her image, and that she's choosing better songs.

3. Nadia Turner, 49 points. I like her, but she doesn't seem to be pulling in very many votes. She had a bad night two weeks ago with a horrendous rendition of a Cyndi Lauper song, but she did much better last week with Melissa Etheridge. She has a lot of potential as a pop star, I think, even if she doesn't win.

4. Constantine Maroulis, 47 points. Still charming and charismatic, but he's vocally not as good as the others. He's in danger of becoming cheesy; sometimes he overplays his "look at me I'm so lovable" shtick.

5. Anthony Federov, 47 points. He continues to sing well and he plays up his whole Clay Aiken likability, but he's in also danger of becoming cheesy. Sometimes he's a little boring. He seems to lack confidence, and that's going to hurt him.

6. Nikko Smith, 47 points. He's a good singer, but he just doesn't have a lot of soul. He's just not very memorable, and the weird dancing is becoming more of a liability than an asset.

7. Anwar Robinson, 47 points. Also a good singer; also lacking in soul. Sometimes he has too much of a deer-in-the-headlights look to him. He might be just a little bit too nice.

8. Bo Bice, 45 points. I'm probably alone in rating him this low, but I think his old-fashioned style is just wrong for a pop-singer competition. Don't get me wrong, I like him and I hope he does well; I just don't think he has much versatility.

9. Scott Savol, 40 points. Enough said.

Now, note that I have the three girls listed at the top of my scorecard... that's a pretty clear indication that I'm wrong about something, because of the twelve finalists, three girls in a row have been voted off so far. I wasn't surprised when Jessica Sierra and Mikalah Gordon were booted, but Lindsey Cardinale deserved to stay longer.

I'll write again in a few weeks to see how my predictions pan out.
