Apple Watch: Boot Camp
Saturday, 2006 July 1 - 2:30 pm
I've been occasionally running Windows XP (egads!) on my MacBook, using Apple's "Boot Camp" program.

Okay, before you take away my Apple credentials, you should know that the only reason I'm running Windows on my Mac is so I can play "City of Heroes" with Amy on-line. There's no Mac version of that game.

In general, my MacBook runs Windows very, very well. It's virtually indistinguishable from an ordinary Windows box. And with the Intel Core Duo chip, it's pretty darn fast.

Setup and installation of Windows was simple. It was just a couple of clicks to partition the hard drive before the normal Windows installation process started. After the installation, it was just a couple more clicks to install Apple-specific device drivers.

Running Windows for a few weeks, I've only encountered a few oddities:

- The clock. Windows and Apple read the hardware time-of-day clock differently, so the time is several hours off when I boot into Windows. Not a huge deal, just slightly annoying.

- Graphics drivers. Once when waking from sleep, and several times while playing City of Heroes, the graphics driver has gone nuts and forced me to reboot.

Otherwise, pretty much no problem. Yeah, it's Windows and I have to deal with all the normal Windows annoyances. But I feel like I've gotten two computers for the price of one, and that makes me happy.

Curious. the integrated graphics have not made the game painfully slow?

Games are the one reason I would never want to be with a Windows machine. Yeah, they have games for the Mac but by the time they come out in Mac version (if they come out at all), they've already been out for months for Windows anyway, and I'm impatient like that.
