Weekend Activities
Tuesday, 2006 March 28 - 10:14 am
A curling clinic; and, killing plants for fun and profit.

Saturday, I helped teach a curling clinic up in Wake Forest. The Triangle Curling Club has seen a flood of interest ever since the Olympics, so we're running clinics to introduce people to the sport game, and hopefully sign up some new members.

Yeah, I know, curling seems pretty goofy, but you just gotta try it to appreciate it.

Sunday, Amy and I worked in my yard. We had a number of activities planned, but the first one was to dig up one of my pampas grass bushes and replace it with a magnolia tree.

I've had bad experiences with pampas grass before, but digging up the bush brought me to a new level of hell. The roots don't go particularly deep, but there are ten thousand of them, and they cling to the ground like Dubya clinging to the notion of WMDs. The core of plant weighs about 80 pounds, and it's too big to fit in a single yard-waste bag. So we spent about 45 minutes digging and prying the thing up, and then another 45 minutes trying to hack the thing into pieces. I used my pickaxe to chop at it while yelling "DIE! DIE, BUSH! DIE!". Oh, this was about the time my new neighbors came outside.

They did not come over to introduce themselves. They might have even contemplated calling the Secret Service.

We had planned to do more yard work that day, but after all that, we opted instead to start drinking vodka. It might not have been the most productive use of our time, but it was certainly more enjoyable. Less death, more vodka; that's what I always say.
