Weekend Wrapup | Tuesday, 2006 April 11 - 8:19 am |
Poker, dirt farming, and underpants. On Saturday night I played poker. Once again, I came to the final table as the chip leader, only to get my chips eaten away by the rapidly accelerating blinds. And this time I took several bad beats... I lost a third of my chips when my wired queens fell to an ace-jack, and on the hand that knocked me out, my six-two lost to a five-two. Okay, the last one really can't be considered a bad beat, but I was winning the hand all the way to the river, when the other guy made his flush. And I wouldn't have had to go all-in on that one if the blinds hadn't risen to two-thirds of my chip stack already. I did play some really good hands... I won one hand Gus Hansen-style, bluffing all the way with a seven-four offsuit after smelling weakness in my opponent. I then won a big pot on the next hand by betting the same way while holding the nut straight. But in a tournament structure like this, you need to get lucky late in the game to win. Sunday I did a bit of dirt farming again. Amy planted some flowers (dahlias and calla lilies) while I shoveled dirt and rocks. This is the most yard work my house has seen in ten years, and I have to say it's really an improvement. I'll try to get some pictures up when it's done. We also did a bit of shopping. Amy got shoes and pants. I looked at getting some new underpants, but I always get vaguely uncomfortable in the men's underpants section of a department store, because I'm surrounded by pictures of half-naked guys on the labels. When I'm looking for underpants, it might seem to someone like I'm just checking out the dudes. And it's not a gay thing either, because I'm equally uncomfortable in the women's underwear department. While I wear several different kinds of underpants, my favorite are trunks. They're boxer-briefs but they're short; they stop at the top of the thigh. Like this. Though again, I could do without the half-naked dude in the photo. Why can't they market underpants with pictures like this? Or even better, this: Or perhaps even: |
