Television: Idol Preview, Week 8
Tuesday, 2006 April 11 - 8:05 am
It's gonna be Queen night tonight.

When I noticed it was going to be Queen night on American Idol, I started thinking about what songs the contestants should sing. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be wrong on a lot of these because the contestants have an atrocious track record when it comes to song selection, but here's my picks:

Katharine McPhee: "Bohemian Rhapsody".
No, really. She's perhaps one of the few who has the range to sing this song. And I'd like to see her sing a song a little harder, with more seriousness, and without that prefab perfect smile that now seems to be perpetually plastered to her face. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt she'll pick this song; she'll probably pick something much lighter, and it'll come off as karaoke-ish.

Chris Daughtry: "The Show Must Go On".
This was tough, because on the one hand, this song would suit him well... but on the other hand, I'd like to see him show a little versatility by singing something different. This song is definitely a rock song; it's hard and edgy. But I just don't see him singing something like "Crazy Little Thing Called Love".

Kellie Pickler: "We Are the Champions".
Kellie's gonna have a tough time with this week's category. I picked this song because it's a power-vocal song, and she's definitely got the pipes to sing this with volume. This would show off her strong suit.

Taylor Hicks: "Killer Queen".
After a few weeks of boring songs, Taylor needs to sings something lyrical and interesting. And this song is stylish enough for him.

Paris Bennett: "I Want to Break Free".
This song is high enough to fit her range, and she's got an opportunity to inject some soul into it. It should work for her.

Ace Young: "Play the Game".
This was a pretty easy choice... there's lots of falsetto to fit his voice, and it's light enough to fit his style.

Elliott Yamin: "Who Wants to Live Forever".
Elliott needs a dramatic song that goes pretty high, and this fits the bill. Of all the songs, this one might be the only one that goes with that vibrato of his.

Bucky Covington: "Fat Bottomed Girls".
This is almost a no-brainer... it's vocally pretty easy, it's got a country beat, and it's silly. It's got Bucky written all over it.
