Good News, Bad News
Wednesday, 2006 May 31 - 8:35 am
Running! Again!

Tuesday's two-mile time: 19:30. It's a good-news, bad-news kind of thing. The good news is, I finally went running again, for the first time in about nine months. The bad news is, I only made it two miles before I collapsed into a wheezing pile of jello. The good news is, I did manage to keep it under 20:00. The bad news is, I'm a full three minutes slower than the pace I was hitting last summer.

But it's a start, anyway.

Last week I took the whole week off from work. Between the trips to Michigan and Elkin, I had planned to do a bunch of work around the house. I did manage to do a little work in the yard, but on my bathroom floor project (which started several months ago), I only got as far as drawing a few lines on the floor where the tile is going to go. (Amy and I have a joke about all of our unfinished projects... it always ends with "the puppet show", which is our plan to make funny short videos with puppets. That project seems to always end up at the bottom of the list.)

To be fair, it wasn't entirely my fault that I didn't get much accomplished. On Wednesday, the hard drive on my main computer started to fail, so I had to frantically back up as much as I could and replace the drive. It was a day-long process of copying and trying to piece together lost files. One thing I'm still missing: the much-hyped February 5th episode of Grey's Anatomy from my TiVo (I've been TiVo-ing the whole season, to watch during the summer), the episode called "It's The End of the World". Dang it. I'll have to try to TiVo the repeat broadcast or something, unless somebody out there happens to have that episode handy.

That's the thing about TV shows; you kinda become a slave to them after a while. That's why I try to avoid watching too many shows.

One thing to which I'm no longer a slave: the newspaper. I've been reading the daily newspaper for something like twenty years. (Um, mostly for the comics, I'll admit.) But lately I've been wrestling with a two-month backlog of old newspapers (which I have to read in order, because I'm obsessive-compulsive like that). I've finally resigned myself to the fact that I'll never catch up, and that reading two-month old papers isn't exactly the best way to keep up with current events. (As Egon Spengler said in "Ghostbusters": "Print is dead.") So I've cancelled my subscription. And though I still fret a little bit about the stuff I might miss, I do feel like a great load has been taken off my shoulders.

And that's good news.

I cancelled the paper a while ago too. It is hard after many many years of reading it (yeah, mostly for the comics), but as an interim measure a coworker is bringing me their day-old papers. It's my Nicorette, I guess.

I share your OCD-ness about papers and such: if I go on vacation I MUST look through all the papers when I return, even if I've read a different paper where I was. I mean, what if somebody I know died or got arrested or something? I'm still working on getting over that feeling of "missing something."

For your daily comics fix, look for a widget called Wimic, which is awesome!

I'm saddened that you cancelled your print subscription. For one, I believe we must preserve the newspaper. But most importantly, it's subscribers like you that keep the online version free for the rest of us cheapskates. Well, except for the Columbus, Ohio newspaper web sites, but then again who really cares about news from there?
