Television: Idol Update, Week 3
Thursday, 2006 March 9 - 2:25 am
16 contestants left; some of our favorites stumble!

THE WOMEN:

Mandisa: 10/10. Overall=8.8.
"I'm every woman", she sings. Careful, hon, you're just asking for fat jokes there. But it's a great performance; solidly on-key and fun. She's a natural.

Kellie Pickler: 10/10. Overall=8.5.
Could she get any cuter? Simon calls her a "minx", and she says, "I'm a MINK!" She sings Melissa Etheridge, a good song choice for her because it hits her range and her style. She nails it. I dare say she sang it better than the original. And Simon says he likes her better than Carrie Underwood.

Katharine McPhee: 9/10. Overall=7.7.
She sings Aretha, and is surprisingly good! You go, white girl. It's fun, on-key, and she's improved her look tremendously.

Ayla Brown: 6/10. Overall=5.7.
She sings Natasha Bedingfield; it's not very challenging, and she's a little pitchy with it. It's a fun song for her, and she looks good, but at times her singing sounds labored.

Paris Bennett: 5/10. Overall=5.7.
Paris, Paris, what's happening to you? Miami Sound Machine, are you kidding? She looks like she's having fun, but it's just a terrible song choice; it doesn't show off her singing, and it's nearly impossible to sing it on-key throughout. Come on, Paris, give us a little bit of soul.

Melissa McGhee: 6/10. Overall=5.5.
She sings Heart, which is right in keeping with her style. A good choice, but something about her voice sounds weird singing it. It's a little pitchy, but a pretty good performance overall. But just pretty good, and maybe not enough to keep her in the competition.

Lisa Tucker: 6/10. Overall=5.3.
The straight hair looks great on her, so that's an improvement. The singing is just okay; it's mostly dull and forgettable.

Kinnik Sky: 4/10. Overall=5.3.
It should have been a good song, but the pitch was all over the place; in the middle she was WAY off key, and she knew it. This might be it for "Lips".

THE MEN:

Taylor Hicks: 9/10. Overall=8.7.
BUNNY! (He shows up on video in a bunny costume.) I like him because he goes out and owns the songs every week. He's the antidote to some of the other guys who always sound like they're singing karaoke. He's right in his element again, choosing a good song and putting a lot of fun and energy into it. How can you not root for this guy?

Chris Daughtry: 6/10. Overall=8.0.
Urgh, this is the first off-night I've seen from him. It's a bad song choice, and his voice is shaky throughout. Is he nervous? No matter; people like him too much, so I'm sure he'll survive this week.

Gedeon McKinney: 7/10. Overall=6.7.
The guy is consistent; just not memorable. He starts a little flat but finishes well. His main problem is that his singing lacks character; at best it's cabaret-ish, at worst it's just boring.

Ace Young: 8/10. Overall=6.5.
I can just see women swooning all over America. This is one pretty dude. He sings Michael Jackson and hits a pretty good falsetto; it's not my favorite song, but I can see how people would like it.

Elliott Yamin: 6/10. Overall=6.5.
Back down to earth after last week's amazing performance; this time he's boring and karaoke-ish. It doesn't seem like the right style of song for him.

Bucky Covington: 6/10. Overall=5.7.
Again, just another bar-band song. He's like someone who's aspiring to be Bo Bice. Boring, unchallenging; he sings it on-key, but it's completely forgettable.

Will Makar: 4/10. Overall=4.0.
This guy is just stuck in mediocrity. Another karaoke performance. A little pitchy, but mostly just boring. Pack your bags, you're going home.

Kevin Covais: 3/10. Overall=2.3.
This week he looks like George Bush, with the ears and the blinking and all. He sings "Starry Starry Night", which is sure to appeal to the geriatric set and anyone looking to fall asleep. He's got too much vibrato and it's starting to bug me. I wish he would go, but I'm guessing he'll hang on for a while longer.

Kinnik is out; no surprise there. Will Makar, ditto.

Ayla is out! She's nearly in tears, poor thing. And now Gedeon is out. In both cases, it's the curse of being pretty good, but not memorable or charismatic enough.
