Stanley Cup Update: Hurricanes Go Up 1-0
Tuesday, 2006 June 6 - 9:26 am
Wow.

Here are some weird things about this year's hockey season:

- The Carolina Hurricanes are in the Stanley Cup finals.
- The Detroit Red Wings aren't.
- The network carrying all the hockey games is OLN, the Outdoor Life Network. Because yeah, hockey is so outdoors.

But wow, Game 1 of the finals was spectacular. The 'Canes go down 3-0 in the second period, then score the next four goals to go up 4-3. Edmonton gets a tying goal late in the third period. Edmonton's goalie, Dwayne Roloson, gets hurt when his own defenseman shoves a Carolina forward into him and the goalpost. The backup goalie, Ty Conklin, misplays a puck behind the net with 32 seconds left, and Carolina center Rod Brind'Amour scoops up the puck and tucks it into the goal for the miraculous comeback win.

Carolina's rookie goalie, Cam Ward, had 34 saves, many of them downright spectacular.

It was just an amazing game. How can people not like hockey? This is the Stanley Cup FINALS, and it's being shown on an obscure cable network. It didn't even make the cut for ESPN2, which shows stuff like log-cutting and fishing and cheerleading. Geez.

I hate hockey. But then, I live in Edmonton, so there is actual suffering involved. Vandalism, rioting, arson.

I firmly believe that Carolina winning the Cup would be the first sign of the apocalypse. I am a big hockey snob, plus I am very well aware of their, shall we say, overly blatant attempts to influence the referee's calls throughout the playoffs. Yes, every team does that, but Carolina seemed to be exceptionally whiney about it.

Is anyone other than you watching these games down there?

I was amazed to see Arron Ward (U of M Alum) stand where with his mouth opne, screen his own goalie, and deflect a shot into his own goal. Well done. He is lucky they won.
