Television: Alias
Tuesday, 2006 June 6 - 9:37 am
Okay, this is old, but I need to get it off my to-blog list.

Did anyone stick around with "Alias" to the very end, like I did? I think that show jumped the shark long time ago, after Sloane switched alliances again and everyone started trusting him again, only to have him double-cross them again. Or maybe it was when they came up with away for one person to get imprinted with another person's thoughts and memories. Or maybe it was when the world was in danger of being overrun by vampires. I dunno. The show just lost credibility.

Speaking of "jumped the shark", I believe the phrase "jumped the shark" has jumped the shark. I'm seeing it used far too often. I'm going to propose the use of a new phrase: "the dolphin spoke". See, when I was watching the movie "Johnny Mnemonic" with Keanu Reeves, there came a point in the movie where we saw a dolphin in a tank with a bunch of wires attached to it. And I turned to my friend and said, "If that dolphin speaks, this will officially be the worst movie I've ever seen." And it did, and it was.

I think the dolphin spoke on Alias a couple seasons ago. But I still watched it to the end, and it came to a fairly satisfactory conclusion.

what happened at the end? i gave up a few years ago; back when i was also torturing myself with the last crappy season of friends, secretly hoping for an alias/friends crossover where she was assigned to kill off all the friends and they would all die and leave me along in peace.

I stuck around! I actually quite enjoyed this last season, much more than the one previous to it. And I thought the ending was quite fitting, particularly given how much they had to squeeze into the last month after having expected a full season.

And those weren't vampires; I thought they were zombies.

I never minded the dolphin speaking on Alias because, well, that's the kind of world they lived in. On the other hand, this year's Gilmore Girls dolphin-speak was a bit silly. (Ah, the long lost child; no one's ever used /that/ device before).

I thought the worst movie you ever saw was Ishtar? Didn't we see that together in 1986? Or maybe that was Alan...

I could never give up on anything that features Jennifer Garner like that.

But yeah, it did get to be a stretch a number of times. Last year's "Dawn of the Dead" finale was a bit odd, but other than that I still enjoyed it. My only problem with the wind down of the season was that I didn't care for this subplot involving Tom and wished they could have devoted that time to help flesh out the finale better.

Hey, I liked Ishtar, and I'm not afraid to admit it. The worst movie I saw in 1986 was probably Howard the Duck.
