Valentine's Day
Tuesday, 2006 February 14 - 9:26 am
Somewhat better this time around.

A year ago, I blasted Valentine's Day as a demeaning slap in the face of single people.

Naturally, my perspective this year is somewhat different. I'm not going to retract my statements from last year. (Except for the part where I misidentified a quote from "Say Anything" as being from "Better Off Dead". Urgh. I hate it when I get movie quotes wrong.) I still believe that holidays like this are cruel to those who aren't lucky enough to be in a loving relationship.

It's just nice being on the other side.

The thing for me and Amy is that we're always looking for an excuse to buy stuff for each other, and to shower each other with affection. Valentine's Day just provides a convenient excuse. Plus, it's only a few days until our six-month dating anniversary, so it's doubly convenient.

We actually started celebrating last Friday, exchanging a bunch of presents. On Saturday, a bouquet of flowers arrived for Amy. On Monday, a bouquet of balloons arrived at work for me. (I'd told her the story about the employee club balloon sale at Nortel.) Last night we went out for dinner. Tonight we're going out again.

And did I mention the drinking?

I still feel like I was okay with my singlehood a year ago. But I wouldn't trade that for where I am now.

So thank you, Amy. This is the best Valentine's Day ever. I love you!

If you like to exchange "hearty" gifts all year round then you must take advantage of the 75% off after holiday sales! Scour every CVS from here to the Mississippi...
