Television: American Idol 2006, Part 1
Saturday, 2006 February 18 - 1:10 pm
Yeah, The Show is back, and I'm gonna blog about it again. Part 1: The Men.

American Idol is past the preliminary rounds, and we're down to the final 24 contestants. Here's how the 12 men stack up.

THE TOP THREE MEN

Taylor Hicks: 29; Birmingham, AL. He looks like he's 50 and he sings a bit like Joe Cocker. Totally unique, and charming in a humble sort of way. Amy says: "God, I LOVE him."

Ace Young: 25; Denver, CO. Good looking and a decent voice; he should go far. I'd say he's this year's Constantine, but Ace seems to have more talent. Amy says: "It's a good thing light travels faster than sound."

Chris Daughtry: 26; McLeansville, NC. Sings with a lot of soul; he's the anti-Aiken. Amy says: "He's gonna need to be able to pay for those Diesel jeans he's wearing." Coincidentally, he looks a bit like Vin Diesel.

THE NEXT THREE MEN

Gedeon McKinney: 17; Memphis, TN. He's kinda funny looking. Good voice and lots of soul, but this formula hasn't worked in past years.

David Radford: 17; Crystal Lake, IL. The obligatory crooner. He'll stick around for a while, but the shtick will get old. Again.

Patrick Hall: 27; Gravette, AR. Pretty good looking; the jury is out on the singing. Hard to tell. Amy says: "He looks like Patrick Dempsey. 'I would like extra anchovies.'"

THE REST OF THE MEN:

Elliott Yamin: 27; Richmond, VA. A good singer, but he doesn't seem to have much personality.

Jose "Sway" Penala: 28; South San Francisco, CA. Not much charisma, and the voice isn't that strong. He does look a little bit Asian, though, so maybe that'll help him. (Ha ha ha.)

Will Makar: 16; The Woodlands, TX. Seems like just another white dude. Amy says: "He reminds me of the guy who sang all that shit I didn't like." (I correctly guessed that she was talking about John Mayer.)

Kevin Covais: 16; Levittown, NY. No way; he's just not an American Idol. Simon says he's "not the best singer". Amy says: "He's the baby that Dick Cheney ate and shat out."

Bobby Bennett: 19; Denver, CO. Uh, he's HUGE. And not very attractive. An American Idol? I doubt it. Amy says: "Is there more than one person living in there?"

Bucky Covington: 28; Rockingham, NC. Who? Oh yeah, I vaguely remember him butchering a bunch of lyrics.
