Television: Grey's Anatomy
Sunday, 2005 September 25 - 11:41 pm
"Grey's Anatomy" is back for its second season, and it's off to a strong start.

I'm impressed. ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" is becoming the opposite of "E.R.". The characters are complex and interesting, the story lines are tight, and the hospital setting is a backdrop for the plot development, rather than the centerpiece. In other words, "Grey's Anatomy" seems to be getting better and better.

I like that all the characters are flawed in some way, and in a human way, not some melodramatic "I killed a man in Croatia" kind of way. I like that the cast is diverse, and that the diversity doesn't descend into simple stereotypes. But mostly, I like how the show is hopeful, despite the bad things that happen in it. There's a dark element to it, but it's never painfully grim.

The show doesn't have all the star-power and hype of some of ABC's other blockbusters. And for that reason, I fear it may languish in relative obscurity. But I think this show could be a real hit if ABC gives it a chance. Perhaps its cushy timeslot (right after "Desperate Housewives") may be a good sign.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, and my TiVo programmed.
