Edwards Wins North Carolina Caucus
Sunday, 2004 April 18 - 8:54 am
In more of a statement about vice-presidential preference, rather than presidential preference, half of the Democrats who voted in Saturday's caucus selected John Edwards as their choice.

It would have reflected poorly on John Edwards, had he not won the primary in his home state (or perhaps I should say, his "other" home state), despite the fact that the nomination process is sewn up already. But this solidifies the idea that Edwards could help John Kerry carry Southern states in the upcoming November election.

The numbers indicate that about one percent of registered Democrats showed up to vote. Some might see this as low; others might be surprised that anyone came to vote at all, given that the vote really doesn't count for much. I thought the turnout might have been higher; Chapel Hill's town hall was quite crowded when I went to cast my ballot.

I would hope that this spurs Kerry to make a vice-presidential choice soon. I think Edwards is the logical choice, despite his own presidential ambitions. It would probably make it less likely that Edwards would run against Kerry in 2008, right? What sitting vice-president has ever turned traitor and run against the incumbent President, since the modern election system was instituted? (If such a case exists, please let me know... it'd be an interesting bit of history to study.)
